In part one of our series I discussed about grammar and briefly how to avoid mistakes on your writing. Part two came with 5 mistakes writers should avoid. Today we want to continue with part 3 of our series.
3 Skills that a blogger/writer must posses
In part one and two we specifically dealt with general skills, so in part three today we dig dipper into other necessary skills which will make your blog spicier.
1. Stylistic Skills
It is not enough to write correct sentences but the sentences must be also manipulated to achieve the desired effect in the communication process. This means the sentences need to be organized in a manner that suits the message being communicated and the audience that the text is target for. As a writer you must be able say what you want to communicate in a style that is not offensive to your readers.
Writers must not only be courteous but they too need to cautious in their writing. Avoid being casual in whiling communicating in writing. The style you use in your writing your blog dictates or determines the response from the readers. For example let us have a look at some few sentences in different styles
v What is your name?
v May I know your name please? v Could you tell me your name? |
ü Where is my laptop?
ü Do you know where my laptop is? ü Could you help me find my laptop? |
You will agree with me that all the above sets of sentences mean the same in the context that they were used. However, the difference is on the styles. In each set, despite of the sentences meaning the same thing, the second and third sentences sound more polite that the first ones.
2. Mechanical skills
As a writer you need to have mechanical skills. When I say mechanical skills here, I don’t mean being able to repair a machine or any device. Mechanical skills in writing refer to an ability to have well written and organized content. These skills include:
- Shape of the text
- Appearance of the text
- Punctuation
- Spelling
- Choice of words, etc
What I mean here is you should have the skills that are necessary to enhance comprehension.
3. Judgement skills
- Judgement is not only applicable in courts of law. It cuts across all spheres of life. A writer should posses sound judgement skills. These include;
- Selection of proper information to communicate
- Selection of the order in which the information is to be delivered
- Filtering the information to choose which is to be communicated and which should be left out
